Lower Town (Donji Grad) - Republic of Croatia Square, Lenuci Horseshoe
- Trg Republike Hrvatske, Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square, Cibona Tower, Croatian National Theater, Croatian State Archives, Mimara Museum, Zrtava Fasizma Square, Society of Fine Arts, Westin Hotel, BW Astoria Hotel, Funiculare
The Croatian National Theatre is a beautiful yellow baroque building completed in 1895, at the mighty Republic of Croatia Square (Trg Republike Hrvatske), one of Zagreb’s largest squares. Here you also find the Museum of Arts and Craft, The St George dragon statue and the modern Music Academy's university building with its colourful rainbow beacon on the roof. The square is part of the Lenuci Horseshoe, a U-shaped system of city squares with parks in downtown. Croatian State Archives is a grandiose jugend building. Cibona Tower is a curved, 22-storey glass skyscraper from 1987, tallest in Croatia if you count the mast. Next to it is the Drazen Petrovic Museum, about Croatia's famous basket player, and the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum. The Mimara Museum is a large art museum housed in a palace like grey building facing Roosevelt Square opposite our hotel, the Westin, (currently closed after the 2020 earthquakes). Park Zrinjevac, or Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square, is a small beautiful park, part of Lenuci's Horseshoe, lined with beautiful old buildings housing embassies, old fashioned street lights, large fountains, a music pavilion and the famous Zrinjevac Meteorological Column from 1884 that can record to record temperature, humidity, and air pressure over time. In the park you find the Supreme Court, the Archeological Museum and other important buildings. Ilica is the main shopping street that goes West of the square.
We stayed at two hotels, The Westin Zagreb (5 star), and the Best Western Premier Hotel Astoria (4 star), both in Lower Town.
