The Westin Hotel Zagreb
- Views, review
The first two nights in Zagreb we stayed at The Westin Zagreb, a large 5 star luxury hotel with 1549 room (of which 44 suites and 49 apartments). After we returned from trips to Slovenia and Italy, we returned to another hotel just for the change. The Westin, part of the upscale American chain that built the world's two tallest hotels in the 80s (in Atlanta and Detroit), is a rebranded InterContinental hotel. For some years it was named Hotel Opera. Housed in a 17-storey modernist highrise built in 1975 and renovated in 2005, a building that doesn't look much for the eye except for the irregular shape of the windows. The entrance and lobby is another story, however, with posh flowers and light marble floor. We stayed at a twin room, it was on the 15th floor so it had amazing views over Zagreb's city center with Lower Town, Upper Town and surrounding mountains. The room was modern, with a simple yet elegant style in Earth colours. A small but nice marble bathroom, desk, hairdryer, AC, coffee maker, free wi-fi, wardrobes, housecoats and flatscreen TV and other things you could expect from a 5 star hotel were provided. A new bottle of water was provided the second day. This was my first hotel visit during the pandemic, and face masks were mandatory in all public areas, and hand sanitizers were provided. The breakfast was not included, and we didn't try that since it was extremely expensive (225 euro extra per person). The elevators are really fast and the public areas look really nice.
The location is at the address Krsnjavoga 1, opposite the Mimara Museum and Roosevelt Square, in Lower Town. It is close to the Nikolai Tesla Technical Museum, but not in the immediate city center. However, it is just a short walk or tram ride from Ban Jelacic Square.
The spa was in the basement and consisted mostly of a large pool, but had no jacuzzi and sauna and to be honest it had seen better days, just like the gym that otherwise was quite nice. There is also an outdoor pool, a restaurant and a casino in the hotel. The staff was fairly polite, but very impersonal and didn't have the extra effort you could expect of a 5-star hotel. We had a really great deal for this kind of hotel, and must say that it was a very good value for money. I was excited to stay at a large Westin hotel for the first time, and the views were an extra plus. It claims to have been visited by world leaders and royalties after all, so the expectations were high.
