Av. 24 de Julho (24th of July Avenue) is a modern, wide avenue that goes along the water of Tagus River, from the old town towards Praca de Comercio, the heart of Lisbon. The avenue is trafficated by modern trams, you find advanced graffiti, the parks Jardim Dom Luis and Jardim Nuno Alvarez. The most striking modern building is the EDP (Energias de Portugal), the headquarters of Portugal's energy company, with striking diagonal angles with glass and white lines, and a courtyard. It was built in 2016. Mercado da Ribeira is a popular markethall along the avenue. It is Lisbon's main food market since 1892, it has an iron interior and a large oriental dome. Next to the river is the art nouveau railway station Cais do Sodré (South Station). Eastwards it changes name to Av. Ribeira das Naus, where you find the colourful buildings of Ministério do Mar (Ministry of the Sea, part of the Portugese Government) and a beautiful promenade with views of the Tagus River and the 25th of April Bridge. Several tuktuks (3-wheeled taxis) can be found in this area. To the East of Praca do Comercio, the avenue goes along the Alfama district, and changes name to Av. Infante Dom Henrique. During our visit, two giant luxury cruise ships, where docked at the port near this avenue; MSC Divina and Mein Schiff 2. Divina was constructed 2010-12 and takes 3502 passengers, is 333m long, 67m high, weighs 139 400 gross tons and sails both in the Mediterranean Sea and the Caribbean Sea. Mein Schiff 2 is a 264m long German ship launched in 2011. Along the riverside, you find sand sculptures (there is a man that creates new ones every day) and Cais das Colunas, a monument where a stairway leads down to two columns in the water. |
