25th of April Bridge- Pillar 7 Experience, Alcantara, Views of Belém
Ponte de 25 de Abril (25th of April Bridge), is a suspension bridge South of central Lisbon, just North of Belem., connecting Lisbon and the suburb Almada. It is very similar to the Golden Gate Bridge, it is red, also a suspension bridge and was built by the American Bridge Company (that bult San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge but not Golden Gate). The 25th of April bridge was completed in 1974 and has both a road and a railway, and an observation deck with a museum near the west edge. It is 2277m long. The two pillars are also Lisbon's tallest structures, 190m tall each. Pilar 7 Bridge Expericence is a new, very cool exhibition with elevators that goes up to the level of the road of the bridge, with glass floors with views over Lisbon. It tells the story of the bridge and offers views towards Belém, Alcantara, Rio Tajo and Parque Florestal de Monsanto, it opened in 2018. There is a high Christ Statue in the municipality of Alamada on the other side of the river, just like in Rio. The statue’s observation deck can be visited, and looks over central Lisbon and the river. 111m high, the statue is Lisbon's 3rd tallest structure. The district where the Northern, most central point of the 25th of April Bridge is situated, is called Alcantara, a quite, picuresque residential area divided in Alcantara-Terra (ground) and Alcantara-Mar (sea), each with its own railway station. |
