Lower Town (Donji Grad) - King Tomislav Square (Trg Kralja Tomislava), Central Station
- Art Pavilion, King Tomislav Statue, Glavni Kolodvor, Hotel Esplanade
King Tomislav Square (Trg Kralja Tomislava) is a green square/park in front of the Central Station. The Art Pavilion is a beautiful yellow baroque building, facing the green King Tomislav Square. It was inaugurated in 1898 and was temporaily closed due to covid and earthquakes, during our visit in 2021. The square is a popular meeting place where you also find an equestrian statue of King Tomislav, where people like to sit down and relax. The central railway station, Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor, is beautiful but not very big for being the largest railway station in the country. It opened in 1892 and was rebuilt in 1987 in neoclassical style. Croatia has modern trains but is not a railway country, it is often easier (and cheaper) to find a bus that fits the schedule, even though you can take a few trains within Croatia and to neighbouring countries. One can only wish that Croatia will expand the railway network in the near future, like Italy for example, especially since Zagreb and other cities have problems with pollution. The tram network within the city is really good though, with both old and modern blue trams, that are very inexpensive to ride. Tomislav Square is a big hub for trams.
There is a nice old locomotive just next to the railway station. The Esplanade Hotel is a 5 star hotel in neo-classical style near the square.
