Ban Jelačić Square (Trg bana Jelačića) is the main square and heart of Zagreb, situated in Lower town, just on the stairs to Upper Town. Here people meet under the white clock. This is also a busy tram hub, and here you find beautiful historical buildings as well as modernist buildings, market stalls, monuments like the equestrian Ban Jelačić Statue and Mandusevac Fountain, a modest fountain that gave the city its name, according to the legend a Slavic tribe leader asked a woman called Manda to scoop up some water for him and said: “Mando, dušo, zagrabi vode" . And Zagreb got its named from "zagrabi" and the small fountain from Mando. |
