Zagreb Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary- Holy Mary Monument Zagrebačka katedrala
In Kaptol, Upper Town (Gornji Grad) you find the most prominent historical building in Zagreb; the gothic Zagreb Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary or just Zagreb Cathedral (Zagrebačka katedrala), a 13th century roman catholic cathedral whose spires were damaged during the 2020 earthquakes (and worse in the 1880 earthquake). It is Croatia’s 2nd tallest building (105m to the height of the spires), Zagreb’s tallest building, and the most prominent Gothic building Southeast of the Alps. In front of the cathedral is the beautiful Holy Mary Monument. Intact parts of the city wall are surrounding the cathedral. Due to the two earthquakes in 2020 it was in 2021 still not possible to go inside and see the beautiful interior. During the earthquake one spire was damaged and the other fell down on the bishop's residence. During our visit the damaged spires have been taken down to the ground for renovation and are open to see in close for all visitors (see pictures). The Holy Mary Monument is a beautiful monument with a column and beautiful golden religious figures in front of the cathedral. |
