New Town - Naujamiestis
- Russian-Orthodox Church, Frank Zappa statue, Natalex City Apartments
Vilnius has a also a New Town, Naujamiestis (literally New Town in Lithuanian), that borders the Old Town to the East, Neris River to the North and Vingis Park to the West. It has about 22 000 inhabitants and is part of central Vilnius, and partly in the outskirts. Here you find newer and more neglect buildings from the Soviet times, as well as modern brand new buildings and beautiful early 1900s buildings. Of course it is more quiet with a residential feeling and less tourists then the Old Town. That doesn't mean that there are no sights there though; here you find the Frank Zappa statue and the Zappa wall, the beautiful Russian-Orthodox church St Michael and St Constantine with golden cupolas, just as the Vilnius Railway Station from 1861 (with connections to all neighbouring countries and the airport), marketplaces, interesting buildings and many cheap supermarkets and shopping malls. The Gate of Dawn leads to the Old Town from the New Town. Naujamiestis is where our rent apartment was, part of the Natalex City Apartments that are spread out in the area.
OUR STAY: We stayed in an apartment owned by an apartment hotel called Natalex Apartments. The apartment was situated in a brand new residential building at Mindaugo gatve in Naujamiestis, to the East of Old Town. A large supermarket, Iki, was sitauted opposite our apartment, a great advantage since we had our own kitchen so we could basically live as locals. There was also a bathroom with jacuzzi (!), washing machine, dishwasher, stove, balcony, double bed, coach with table, good wi-fi connection and flatscreen TV. That only costed a few hundred euros a night. The only downside was that the apartment was extremely hot, despite it was not that warm outside, and there was no air condition, so we had to sleep with the balcony door open, making it too cold! Upon our arrival we were driven by a taxi from the airport for an extra fee. That was good since we arrived late in the evening so we didn't have to look for taxis and buses.
