Venice by night, Venezia della noche
- Santa Lucia Station, Canal Grande, Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia, Trains, Grand Canal, Church of San Simeone Piccolo
We didn't see much of Venice after dark, since we only stayed for about 6 hours, and it didn't turn dark until we should leave. Some buildings are illuminated along the Grand Canal, or Canal Grande. The are also beautiful old-fashioned street lights along the canal.
6 hours in Venice was a bit stressful, especially since it is so easy to get lost. We missed the train to the city of Trieste, were we had our accommodation (it is more inexpensive then Venice), from the modern Santa Lucia Station, but were able to catch another train one hour later, using the same ticket. Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia is one of the few modernist buildings that faces the Grand Canal, the station opened in 1861 but the current main building was built in 1952. It is low and wide to prevent it from dominating the historic surrounding architecture. Trains in Italy are in general very modern, many of them are double decked and have chargers at the seats. There is another large station in Mestre, an inland borough of Venice.
Chiesa di Santa Maria di Nazareth is a baroque church next to the station. A notable church on the other side of the Grand Canal, is the Church of San Simeone Piccolo, a large white neo-classicist building with green dome from 1738, facing the Santa Lucia Station.
