Estació del Nord (Northern Station), Plaza del Toros
- Estación del Norte, Calle Xàtiva, Calle Colón
Estació del Nord (Northern Station, Estación del Norte in national Spanish) is the largest and most centrally located railway station in Valencia. It opened in 1917 by the railway company CCHNE. It is situated only 200m from Plaza del Ayntamiento, where Calle Xàtiva changes name to Calle Colón. The station building is very beautiful, since it is built in art nouveau style with many details. We took a train back to Alicante from this station, since we had left our rental car. Since 1987 it is a Spanish cultural heritage building. The great Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation held a concert inside the station in 2005.
Just next to the station is the bullfighting arena Plaza del Toros, built in 1859 after the model of Colosseum in Rome. It holds 12 000 people and outside the arena stands a statue of a matador. The controversial bullfighting is still allowed in Valencia and many other Spanish regions, though protests are held frequently. Ironically, the arena is currently owned by the General Hospital.
