Sumida is a special ward on the East banks of Sumida River, with 257 000 inhabitants. Here you find Tokyo Skytree, the world’s tallest tower, with a height of 634m, that was opened in 2012. Also some very modern skyscrapers can be found, and the Asahi Breweries HQ with a famous flame sculpture on top. It was designed bythe French designer Philippe Starck and symbolises the passionate heart of the brewery. Just next to it is the Asahi Beer Tower with its golden glass exterior. A beautiful red bridge called Azuma Bridge connects Asakusa with Sumida. Ryogoku district is part of Sumida ward where you find Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena (the national sumo arena built in Japanese style in 1985), Edo-Tokyo Museum (a futuristic museum building from 1993 about old Tokyo, Edo) and NTT DoCoMo Sumida Building (a futuristic 27-storey skyscraper built 2003).
