Skylines and views- Antiguo Cuscatlan, El Escalon, Old Town, Quetzaltepec Volcano, Galerias, AirportSan Salvador is situated in the Boqueron Volcano Valley. The highest volcano is Quetzaltepec, or the San Salvador Volcano, that can be seen from all over the city. On top of the peak above the volcano there are several high TV and radio masts. The city is very spread out. There are few highrises and skyscrapers, only a few that are built at traffic circles. Most buildings in San Salvador are lowrise buildings with 1-2 floors, due to earthquake, poverty and personal taste. Most highrises are situated in the West part, and are too spread out to create a skyline. There are no real skyscrapers though, the tallest building has only 25 floors. Due to economical growth is not impossible that the number of highrises will increase in the near future. The best views of the city are from the terrace near the top of the San Salvador Volcano and the nearby El Pampa el Volcan restaurant, from hills, tall buildings and from the market village Los Planes. Central San Salvador: Next to the Salvador del Mundo plaza (the national monument) is Centro Financiero Gigante from 1999, that consist of some of the tallest office buildings in San Salvador, the 17-storey Telefónica towers is a wellknown landmark in the city. There are lots of tall churches in the Historical Downtown, the largest, tallest and most imposing is Catedral Metropolitana (Metropolitan Cathedral). West part: In Antiguo Custatlan you find the 104m tall El Pedregal Torre 1, from 2010, that is the tallest building in the country (and a second tower is planned) and is part of the Mulitplaza shopping complex. It is also one of the few highrise residential buildings in the country, almost all of them are in the West part of San Salvador. Next to the highrise is the San Salvador El Salvador Temple, a large mormon temple with interesting architecture, built in 2011. Torre Cuscatlan, a significant glass bank skyscraper that was tallest building in El Salvador from 1989-2008, is also situated in the West part. It has 19 floors and is 79m tall, enough to be a skyscraper in El Salvador. The landmark of the World Trade Center San Salvador (WTCSS) complex, built in 2009, is the 20-storey Torre Futura, a curvy green "intelligent" glass building. It is the 3rd tallest building (92m) in El Salvador (4th tallest in Central America excluding Panama) and one of the most modern office buildings in the city. |
