Rome by night
- Piazza Cavour, Piazza di Spagna, Via del Corso, Piazza Navona, Piazza Colon, Campo di Fiori, Piazza Barberini, Piazza Venezia, Fontana di Trevi, Via Sistinas, Tiber, Castel Sant'Angelo, Trajan's Column, St Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
We were walking through Centro Storico, the historical center of Rome, several times after dark. Except for some piazzas, like Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna and Campo di Fioro, it is surprisingly not so lively at night. There are people outside, but it is not buzzling like New York for example.
Many of the historical monuments, churches and other buildings are beautifully illuminated at night, making it very nice to walk around. Colosseum, Pantheon and St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City are nicely illuminated at night. Some of the small alleys look dark and mysterious, while the main roads have brand stores with illuminated display windows. Piazza Cavour, the square close to our hotel, was especially nice with it's palms and the impressive Palace of Justice. Our hotel, Sant'Angelo, was a small 3 star hotel with nice staff and good service. It had an atmosphere, and we stayed in an annex to the main building at Via M. Dionigi next to Piazza Cavour. The Trevi district around the Trevi fountain is also very nice at night.
Many tourists walk around the city center of Rome at night. It feels safe, you will not see many gangs or other obscure types and there are many polices in Rome, day and night. Many stores and restaurants are open until late in the evening and there are night clubs and rooftop terraces.
