Maskavas Forstate
Maskavas Forstate means Moscow suburb, but is not a suburb. It is a large district with the North borders to the city center. Close to the city center and the central station you can find the Central Market, Europe's largest indoor market, and the tall historic highrise Latvian Sciences Academy Building. This buildings has an outdoor observation balcony on the 17th floor, the views from it can be seen in this section. In Maskavas Forstate there are many beautiful church towers in different styles, and mostly residential buildings. The district reminds of some neighbourhoods in Moscow and Berlin, with its gritty look. I mostly visited the neighbourhood around Gogola street, near the city center, but also took pictures of the district from above when visiting the Sciences Academy Building. |
GOGOGLA STREET AND THE LATVIAN SCIENCES ACADEMY BUILDING: |
The Latvian Academy of Science Building, here seen from Turgeneva iela, was completed in 1958, during the Soviet rule. It was the first skyscraper in Latvia. It has 21 floors and the top of the spire reaches a height of 107.6m. The building is sometimes nicknamed "Stalin's wedding cake" because of its shape. It resembles Stalin's 7 gothic towers of Moscow. The outdoor observation balcony is situated on the height of 65m. |

Riga Central Maket (Rigas Centraltirgus), situated near the central station, in Maskavas Fostate, is the largest indoor market in Europe. It was built 1924-30 and is included in the UNESCO world heritage list. It consists of 5 huge pavilions, originally built to house zepellins! They are built in a neoclassicism and art deco style. The area is 72 300 m2. The market opened in 1930, said to then be the world's largest market. It is a good way to experience Latvian food and culture, each pavilion has a special direction; fish, bakeries, meat etc. There are also outdoor market stands outside the main buildning, and separate stores outside and inside the pavilions. |
