Kegon Falls- Nikko National Park, Lake Chuzenji, Mt. Nantai
10km West of the city of Nikko, right next to the beautiful Lake Chuzenji, is Kegon Falls, a beautiful waterfall that is a great attraction for visitors of Nikko. It is 97 m high and surrounded by beautiul green montains. The falls were formed when the Daiya River was rerouted by lava flows. An elevator and a tunnel takes you down to viewing platforms on different levels. There are monkeys around the lake, visitors are encourage to be careful while eating. In spring, cherry blossoms are blooming. 12 smaller waterfalls are situated behind and around Kegon Falls. The famous Japanese poet Misao Fujimura comitted suicide at the falls in 1903, and wrote a famous farewell poem. We did a bus tour to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji our second day in Nikko. To get there the bus have to drive through winding, steep, curvy mountain roads. |
