Outskirts of Murcia
- Heart of Jesus Christ Statue, Castillo de Monteagudo, Estadio Nueva Condomina, Segura Valley
The outskirts of Murica looks much grittier then the central parts, it reminds a lot of cities in Mexico. There are also modern commercial districts with highrises, modern highways and shopping malls.
When you leave Murcia to the North, via a tiny road, you will pass by a 149m high rock in Segura Valley with a significant statue that can be seen all over the city, the Heart of the Jesus Christ Statue (El Cristo de Monteagudo) at Castillo de Monteagudo, an ancient Moorish castle. The original Jesus statue from 1926 was destroyed during the civil war, and was replaced by a new one in 1951, created by Nicolas Martinez Ramon, and supported by the Franco regime. The new statue is slightly taller, 14m tall. Since many climbers got hurt by the statue, that is in a poor condition, there have been voices to remove this important symbol of Murcia! And the Monteagudo Castle has remainings from the Islamic period, so some people think it doesn't fit with the Jesus statue on top of it. The castle is also in a poor condition and needs maintenance, it can be dangerous to visit. We only passed by briefly on the way to Valencia. The Segura Valley is surrounded by mountains.
