Macau skylines and views
from Fortaleza do Monte and other places

Macau has a pretty nice skyline. Neat compared to Hong Kong but still impressive! Macau is "small" after all, with Chinese standards, the city has "only" about 600 000 inhabitants. The tallest structure is the 338 m tall observation tower Macau Tower from 2001 and the tallest building is Grand Lisboa Hotel (261m), a golden lotus shaped extention from 2008 of the old Lisboa Hotel. The largest highrise cluster is situated on Macau Peninsula, in Macau's city center, where the new Nam Van casino district and the CBD (Central Business District) are. There are also many tall residential buildings and hotels nearby this area. The newest cluster is Cotai Strip on Taipa Island, opposite the peninsula. The tallest building on Taipa is the famous Venetian Hotel (225m) from 2007, third tallest in Macau and the world's largest hotel and casino. Only one of Macau's 20 tallest skyscrapers was built before 2005; the 38-storey Bank of China Tower, built in 1991, was for a long time Macau's tallest building. At this time Macau was mostly famous for the old Portugese colonial buildings in the old town. A special feature of Macau's skyline is, as it is a gambling town where most of the skyscrapers are Las Vegas styled casino hotels, that many buildings are illuminated in fancy, frequently changing neon colours after dark. An impressive sight! As many of the skyline pictures where taken from the historic military fort Fortaleza do Monte (Monte Fort) from 1626, that is situated on a hill, this page is also about this fort.
