Lower Town - Grund district, Pfaffanthal- Nëiminster Abbey, Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, Youth Hostel Luxembourg, Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg Station, Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator, AlzetteThe Upper Town (Ville-Haute), that is the city center where most sights are, is right above the Lower Town , that is in the valley below. It is divided into Grund district and Pfaffenthal. It is more quite but have some sights. I stayed at the city’s only Youth Hostel,, in the part called Pfaffenthal, a romantic small scale neighbourhood. High above the hostel was two bridges, one historic with arch, and one very modern - Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, where the lightrail tram runs. In Grund, the lower part is the Neimënster Abbey. The original abbey was destroyed in 1542 and rebuilt in 1688-1720, but when it was secularized in 1796 it was used as a prizon and barracks. During WWII the abbey was used as a prizon by the nazis, and in 1994-2004 it was renovated and reopened as a meeting place and culture center. Connected to the abbey is the Church of St John in Grund (Saint-Jean-du-Grund), a landmark of the Lower Town. The current baroque church was completed in 1705. The river Alzette divides the upper part from the lower part. Casemates (Casements du Bock), is a 21-kilometer network of underground passages hewn from solid rock. They are between the upper and lower town. They were unfortunately closed for the day when I reached them. The Pont du Château (Castle Bridge) is a popular spot to watch the views of the Lower Town.
