Vauxhall is a district in Southeast London, part of the Lambeth borough, along the Thames. There are many modern buildings constructed lately, many of them skyscrapers. Already in 2006 the St George Wharf residential complex was constructed in postmodern style, but since 2014 even St George Wharf Tower, a 49-storey skyscraper is there. The 200m tall City Tower One Nine Elms will be even taller in 2022 though. The 50-storey DAMAC Tower from 2021 is also eyecatching. Vauxhall has given name to the car company with the same name (Vauxhall is now the British version of Opel).
Nine Elms is a neighbouring district to Vauxhall. Vauxhall and Nine Elms forms one of London's most impressive skylines. Vauxhall Bridge leads to Westminster and Pimlico on the other side of Thames, and has great views.
MI6, the British Secret Intelligent Service, have their headquarters in a large postmodern building from 1994 along the Thames in Vauxhall. The MI6 building is often featured in James Bond.
Blackfriars is on North and South side of Thames. Blackfriars underground station is on the North side. Here you find the neo-classicist Unilever HQ Building. On the South side is One Blackfriars, a 163m tall glass skyscraper from 2018.
Southwark is a large district on the South side of Thames. Here you find The Shard, UK:s tallest building, and Europe's tallest upon completion. It is a 309.7m tall pyramid shaped glass tower with 72 floors, completed in 2013, facing Central London fromRiver Thames. There is a two-storey observation deck on top (the views can be seen in this section), it was designed by Renzo Piano and features apartments, offices, a luxury hotel and part of a hospital!
London Bridge Station is a large railway that was completely redeveloped and modernised during the construction of the Shard, that originally was called the London Bridge Tower. It is now huge and airport like with large concourses. London Bridge Station was where I arrived by train after landing at Gatwick Airport. Despite being so modern now, it is the oldest station in central London, dating back frrom 1836, and one of the oldest in the world. You can still see the old parts with arches and so on.
Tate Modern, one of the world's most popular modern art galleries is in a large building in Southwark. The museum is one of the world's 3 most visited museums, it is free of charge and can be seen here. The Switch House is a tall section that has been added, unfortunately the observation deck was closed.
In 2002 the new City Hall of London opened in a very unusual glass shaped building designed by Norman Foster in Southwark, facing Thames. Inside there is a surrealistic helical staircase. It is now next to the Shard. But already in 2022 it was replaced by a new City Hall in Newham. Both city halls are in neo futuristic style. Queens Promenade is a promenade along the Thames in Southwark. Here you fnd the Hays Galleria, an impressive old yellow-brick building with a cool ship sculpture.
Millennium Bridge is the most futuristic bridge in London and crossed over Thames from Southwark to the City of London. The iconic and historical Tower Bridge from 1894 also goes from the City of London to Southwark, as well as Southwark Bridge and London Bridge.
