Docklands is a huge harbour area and riverfront in the former docks are of London, divided between the boroughs Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Newham, and Greenwich. It is sittuated East of the city center, surrounded by River Thames and consist of different main areas: Canary Wharf, Isle of Dogs, Woodwharf, West India Quay. Docklands is today known for its many skyscrapers, futuristic structures and landmark buildings. There are many canals and boats around Canary Wharf and Wood Wharf. A lot of construction is going, much has been completed just recently. One Canada Square in Canary Wharf is a postmodern office tower that was UK:s tallest building from 1991 to 2013 (when The Shard was completed in central London) but now it is not even tallest in the Docklands (it is 2nd of 2022). Known for its pyramid on the top that is illuminated at dark, One Canada Square is sometimes called Canary Wharf Tower. There is a shopping mall with the same name and a dome that look up to the skyscraper. Today it is only 4th tallest in London, with a height of 235m and 50 floors, but it was Europe's 2nd tallest skyscrapers upon completion.
Isle of Dogs is a development next to Canary Wharf, facing River Thames. The tallest building in Docklands is
the Landmark Pinnacle on Isle of Dogs, a modernist 75-storey residential tower, completed in 2020 at a height of 239m. Landmark Pinnacle is not only Dockland's tallest building, it is also London's 3rd tallest building, Euorpe's tallest residential building, and UK:s tallest building to number of floors (all as of 2022). Newfoundland, also completed in 2020, is a 58-storey, 220m tall skyscraper, known fot its cool diagonal patterns. Newfoundland is Dockland's 3rd tallest buildng.
Wood Wharf is a new development that reminds of downtown Chicago, and a bit of Dubai Marina. It consists of mainly new development and has a nice walk along the quay, with sculptures, greenery and benches. The circular residential tower One Park Drive, recently completed (2021) is a landmark of Wood Wharf with its 57 floors.
Crossrail Place is s shopping complex in West India Quay, that has a botanical roof garden, from Canary Wharf you reach it via the retro-futuristic Adams Plaza Bridge. Westferry Circus is a modern circular place with great views over Dockalnds skyline, The Shard and the City of London skyline. Cabot Square is a square in Canary Wharf with abstract sculptures, fountains and the Cabot Place shopping galleria. It overlooks the Canada Square skyscrapers.
To go to Docklands you have to take the DLR train (Docklands Light Rail) and not the Underground. We visited Docklands in 2022 and 2006, but not in 1999 when One Canada Square was the only skyscraper now, and it changes a lot each time you visit it.
