Ljubljana is a beautiful city and after dark many important buildings, statues and fountains become illuminated, especially in the historical Old Town; Ljubljana Castle, Ljubljana Town Hall, St Nicholas Cathedral, Franciscan Church, University Main Bldg, University Library, Post Office, Ursuline Church, Hotel InterContinental highrise and so on. There are many open air restaurants along the Ljubljanica River that are open after dark. The bridges above the river are beautifully illuminated after dark, for example the Triple Bridges have a green light underneath, making boats that pass under it bath in mysterious green light.
The West part of the city center (of Ljubljanica river) has a major road, Slovenska Cesta – or Slovenian Road – that has a quite large amount of highrises. There are stores, office biuldings, hotels and restaurants along this road.
A disappointing thing was that most stores closes very early, considering Ljubljana is a midsized city and a capital it was frustrating since we were not able to buy food (for our planned daytrip the next day) late in the evening. Even if Ljubljana is not known as a vibrant night city, there are nightclubs all over the city, especially in the Old Town, and there are some in the Ljubljana Castle. In 2021, however, many of them were closed due to the pandemic. Slovenian Road was surprisingly empty in the evening, with most stores closed, but the Old Town around the Ljubljanica River, and pedestrian streets/squares like Gorjni trg and Ciril-Metodov trg, were filled with people sitting in outdoor seatings at restaurants, looking at people and illuminated fountains and buildings. The majority of rock concerts are in Metelkova.
