Leeds skyline

- Bridgewater Place, The Plaza, Broadcasting Tower, Candle House, Granary Wharf, Station area, University area, Leeds Dock, Churches, City Square

Leeds might not have as impressive skyline as London or Birmingham, but skyscrapers and highrises have been built in Leeds recently, mainly in two areas, creating a decent skyline:

The Granary Wharf area just south of River Aire, behind the railway station. Here you find the tallest building in Leeds since 2007; the 110m tall Bridgewater Place (137m to the antenna) , that is dubbed "the Dalek" building by locals because of its shape, resembling Doctor Who's enemies. Candle House is a red circular landmark highrise nearby. In this area you also find the Doubletree Hotel (that features Leeds only skybar) and the Hilton, and some other highrises.

The University area, in the Northeast end of the city centre. Here you find both futuristic buildings and old university buildings for( University of Leeds and Beckett University )and churches. The second tallest building, Sky Plaza (or The Plaza), a 36-storey boxy skyscraper from 2009 that contains dormatories and offices, can be found here. Opposite, on Clay Pit Lane, is the futuristic First Direct Arena, and some postmodern buildings. The 23-storey Broadcasting Tower that houses student apartments, also from 2009, is nearby. Opal Tower, also in the area, is a residential highrise with diagonal roofs that was built in 2008, and is the 3rd tallest building in Leeds. Central Village Tower, just West of the university of Leeds, is a modernist 23-storey residential skyscraper for students, built in 2014.

In front of the station, at City Square, is the 20-storey Park Plaza Hotel, tallest building in Leeds 1966-73. From 1973-2008, the boxy Pinnacle right in the city centre, near Briggate, overtook its title. There were plans to build a skyscraper right Briggate in 1938, but the plans were cancelled.

In Leeds Dock, a modern port area East of the city centre you find the modern 20-storey residential highrise Clarence House.

There are many church spires The neo-gothic Leeds Cathedral (Catholic Cathedral of St Anne) is one of two large churches in the city centre; the Leeds Minster, a gothic revival parish church, situated near the river, is the other one. At the university, there are additional tall church spires. Holy Trinity Church with its spire stands right in the heart of the central shopping area. There are plans for a 40-storey students residential skyscraper that will be Yorkshire's tallest building, if built.
