Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias, Teatro Nacional- National Theatre, views, skyline, 6A Avenida, Centro CívicoThe Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias, or Teatro Nacional (National Theatre), is a cultural center in Centro Cívico (Civic Center) in the south part of central Guatemala City. The complex features roof terraces with one of the best views of the city (360 degrees and it is free to go up through the stairs on the exterior of the theater building) since it is situated on a hill. Just next to the cultural complex is the old fort Fuerte de San José. The form of the building complex from 1978, designed by architect Efrain Recinos is very special and resembles a seated jaguar. The center was named after the Guatemalan writer Miguel Ángel Asturias. The complex contains the Gran Sala Efrain Recinos, a large theater named after the architect, the Teatro Cámara and the Teatro Aire Libre, an outdoor amphitheater. Plazas and salons The center also includes several plazas and salons, as well as the Instituto Nacional de la Marimba, all surrounded by palms and greenery. It was really worth to take a stop at the cultural center, explore the architecture and the outstanding views of Guatemala City in the sun. This page features photos of the cultural centre itself with its many interesting 70s details, as well as the views from the terraces. |
