Majorna, Masthugget, Olivedal, Järntorget- Stigberget, Oscar Fredriks Kyrka, Bengans, Masthuggskyrkan, St Johanneskyrkan, Masthuggstorget, Stigbergstorge, Andra Långgatan
West of Järntorget and the city center you find the residential areas Masthugget (where you find the tall Masthuggskyrkan), Haga, Olivedal and Majorna. Majorna is a hilly area where you find the classic record store Bengans, that has a large variety of rock records, and its own café. Stigbergstorget is a nice square on Stigberget, a high hill, where you find Bengans and Gathenhielmska huset. Trams go up this hill from Masthuggstorget, a square that has a tall sculpture. Majorna is very hilly and has mostly a few stories high older wooden apartment buildings, so called "landshövdingehus" (governors houses). On a hill at Masthugget you find the beautiful red-brick, neo-gothic church Oscar Fredriks Kyrka (75m tall), designed by Helgo Zettervall. It is 60m high and was inaugurated in 1893. Other churches are also the 62m tall Masthuggskyrkan that lies on rocks with views over the whole city and St Johannes Kyrka. Masthugget is a mix of nice old buildings and charmless grey modernist apartment blocks. Olivedal (locally dubbed Vegastan) has more of the latter one. It borders the large park Slottsskogsparken. |
