Lindholmen is a district on the large Hisingen island, siutuated right opposite central Gothenburg. It can be reached by a free ferry from Stenpiren. Lindholmen is a former shipyard and industrial area that has been transformed into a IT, science and university district, originally an island of its own. It is now mostly for the site of Karlatornet, that with a height of 245m, will surpass Malmö’s Turning Torso as Scandinavia’s tallest building, and will have company by other, lower skyscrapers, creating a new area called Karlastaden. The others will be called Cassiopeja (43 floors), Auriga (36 floors) and Virgo (27 floors) and scheduled for completion in 2026. Karlatornet will be a 73-storey all residential building and has an unusual twisted design by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (Burj Khalifa, One WTC, Sears Tower) on the upper part. The winning proposal of five was called "the Pole Star". Chalmers Campus Lindholmen, part of Chalmers technical university, is known for a futuristic circular red building and a glass sphere. Lindholmen Science Park is a glass building that hosts many companies. There are small marinas along the riverfront of Göta Älv, facing the city center. SVT (Swedish Television) has a significant building with a diagonal sharp roof, facing the water. Uni3 by Geely is a new glass office complex, built by Geely, the Chinese car manufacturer that owns Volvo. In the complex you find the Geely Walk and the Clarion Hotel The Pier. Radisson Blu Riverside Hotel is a luxury hotel with diagonal lines, facing the river. Dockan is a green residential highrise that was built in 2018. |
