Gdansk - Lech Walesa Airport (Port Lotniczy Gdańsk im. Lecha Wałęsy), is situated 12km to the northwest of the city of Gdansk. Since 2004 it is named after Lech Walesa, the former Polish president and founder of the Solidarity movement. The airport (GDN) opened in 1974 near the village of Rebiechowo to replace the old airport that was closer to the city center. It served about 1.2 million passengers in 2006, half were international and in 2012 2.9 million passengers, so the traffic is increasing fastly! A new terminal was opened in 1997, and an even newer one in 2012.

The airport is connected with the city center by buses, and it took us nearly one hour to reach the central station during rush hour. However there are elevated railway bridges under construction at the airport, so trains will probably be an option in the future. Our flight from Malmö was with Wizzair, a Hungarian airline that I won't recommend even if they are very cheap. For example, they have hidden charges and refuses passangers to enter the plane if they don't pay charges for misunderstandings that are typed in small text, these number of issues are endless!
