Lincoln Park, Chicago North Side
- Chicago Getaway Hostel, Lincoln Park, W Fullerton, North Avenue Beach
Lincoln Park is a quiet neighbourhood in North Side, about 20 min North of downtown by subway, with some busy roads as well. It is famous for its large park; Lincoln Park, for which the neighbourhood was named, is actually Chicago's largest park, and is famous for its zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, that is free to visit but was closed during our visit due to a private event. Lincoln Park is mainly a residential area, where you find many beautiful townhouses, all in different styles. It is considered the wealthiest, safest and most expensive area to live in Chicago. Lots of restaurants, bars and cafés can be found in Lincoln Park, as well as Oz Park, that features a lot of sculptures with a theme from the "Wizard from Oz". This is were we stayed during our visit. Lincoln Park has several small centers, and is quite busy, both day and night, since it is not only a residential area, but also has a lot of night clubs, like the Blues club and the Kingston Mines night club on Lincoln Ave for example, and great restaurants. There are especially many Mexican restaurants in the area. Lincoln Park is known for the Young Lords, a Puerto Rican gang that later became human rights activists.
Chicago History Museum, one of Chicago's largest and most popular museums, can be found in Lincoln Park, as well as Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and the botanical gardens, Lincoln Park Conservatory.
ACCOMODATION REVIEW: We stayed at the Chicago Getaway Hostel in Lincoln Park, one of Chicago's best neighbourhoods. It is a quiet neighbourhood north of downtown, filled with beautiful townhouses and about 15 minutes walk to the beach. Getaway is a very fresh hostel, with a bright, modern interior inside a historic red brick town house building at W Arlington Place. Breakfast was included, it was simple but good, the breakfast room is large, and even has an outdoor terrace. There are also computers with internet, free to lend, the wi-fi was not so good though. The room was very simple without private bathroom and just a small window that couldn't be opened, but after all it is one of the cheapest places to stay in Chicago and the staff is very friendly and helpful, and has overall a great atmosphere, so that was easy to accept. If you can stand to take the subway from Lincoln Park and walk a couple of blocks to get there every evening and morning, it is definately worth it. Every day we walked to the Fullerton subway station and caught the brown line train to the Loop.Since we always walk a lot anyway during our trips, this didn't make any big difference, and it is nice to see this non touristy area.
