Palace of the Parliament - Palatul Parlamentului- House of the Republic, Casa Poporului, Dealul Spirii, National Cathedral, Unirii Boulevard, People's SalvationIn the South part of the city center you find the Unirii Square (Piata Unirii), with grandiose fountains that are lit after dark. The wide Bulevardul Unirii leads to Piata Constitutei, where you find the world's second largest administrative building: the Romanian Parliament Palace (Palatul Parlamentului), that stands on the hill Dealul Spirii. It was built by the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in 1984 and was left unfinished, until it was decided the 1,200 rooms should be used for the parliament. In 1997 it was completed, it is 270m wide. The building's gross floor area is 365,000 m2. The style is postmodern, mainly neoclassical and the exterior is white, illuminated at night. You can take a tour there and see the very large rooms, such as the International Conference Centre with its chandeliers (the sky can be opened on clear days) and the CA Rosetti Hall, that features a chandelier that weighs nearly 5 ton. The building has been featured in many famous movies and TV shows. A big parking lot is situated in the front of the Parliament, during a visit a lonely red Ferrari was parked there. Next to the palace the neo-byzantine national cathedral, People's Salvation Cathedral (Catedrala Mantuirii Neamului) is under construction, it will be the largest and tallest Eastern orthodox Christian church in the world, is white and features golden cupolas. It is already the 2nd tallest building in Romania. |
