Torres de Serranos (Old Town)

Torres de Serranos (the Serrano towers, Puerta de Serranos in Valencian) is a historic structure, situated in the North end of the Old Town, next to Barrio del Carmen, facing the Turia Gardens. This is an ancient gateway of the former city wall, consisting of two towers, each with a viewing platform that can be climbed for a small fee, and offers great views of Valencia. The structure was built 1392-98 in Valencian Gothic style, and is one of only two gates that still exist (the other one is Torres de Quarts), of the ancient city wall's originally twelve gateways. Torres de Serranos was for a long time the main gate and defence for the city, and between 1586-1887 it was used as a prison for noble people, that is the reason why it survived when the city wall was pulled down in 1865. The back facade looks completly different from the front that, that is facing the boulevard.
