Mercado Central, Plaza del Mercado- Mercat Central, Central Market, Placa del Mercat, Placa Redona
Mercado Central, built in 1914 is one of the oldest European markets still running. It was designed by the modernista architects Francesc Guàrdia i Vial and Alexandre Soler. About 400 merchants have their stalls (over 1000 according to some sources) at a surface of 8000m², it is very impressive and beautiful. The market is only open 7:30-14:30 (2016). At the square you also find the gothic church Iglesia de los Santos Juanes, also known as San Juan del Mercado (St John's of the Market). The original gothic interior from the 14th century was destroyed in a terrible fire in 1552 (unfortunately it wasn't open during our visit). Plaza Redonda (Placa Redona in Valencian) is a circular square inside a building, with entrance from the street, near the market. Inside the square there are shops, market stalls and a fountain in the middle. It was designed in the 19th century by Salvador Escrig Melchor. |
