- Outskirts, suburbs and surroundings


Greater Toronto is very spread out, with lots of separate communities in the outskirts and several really large suburbs. The most importants streets, buildings, places, shopping, entertainment and attractions are situated in central Toronto though. Queen Elizabeth Way is the link between Toronto and Niagara Peninsula.

In 1998, six municipalities, then functioning as suburbs, where incorporated into the city of Toronto. Thus the city population increased from about 600 000 to 2.7 million inhabitants in just one year!

Mississauga, ON is a city West of Toronto. With 878 000 inhabitants it is the 6th largest city in Canada! Despite being so large it is still mostly functioning as a huge suburb for Toronto, though the city has made efforts to position itself as an independent city, with several new skyscrapers under construction recent years. The most striking are the curved Absolute Towers, two twisted skyscrapers from 2012 (50 and 56 floors) that can be seen from the airport. Mississauga is where the mayor parts of the Pearson Airport is.

Brampton, ON is with 524 000 Canada's 9th largest city, and is situated in the West part of Greater Toronto. It feels much smaller though. Other notable suburbs are Vaughan, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill etc. North York, now part of Toronto, has a small skyline and an urban center with shopping malls.

Hamilton, ON is situated bout 50km Southest of Toronto, about halfway to Niagara Falls. The city has 520 000 inhabitants, that makes it Canada's 10th largest city. Hamilton is mainly an industrial city but there is a small skyline and a few interesting buildings downtown. However, we only passed by on the highway. Burlington (population 176 000) is situated just northeast of Hamilton. James N. Allan Skyway, part of Queen Elizabeth Way connects Burlington and Hamilton.

Oshawa, ON has 150 000 inhabitants and is situated to the East of Toronto. To the West of Toronto is Kitchener (220 000 inhabitants) and Waterloo (about 100 000 inhabitants).

Niagara Falls (83 000 inhabitants) and Niagara-on-the-Lake are 128km southeast of Toronto, just south of Lake Ontario. They can be found on their own pages. Between Niagara Falls and Toronto is St. Catharines, a city with 392 000 inhabitants that we also passed by. Across the border is USA with Niagara Falls, NY and the larger city Buffalo, NY. The border to USA in Lake Ontario is only about 2km south of Toronto's shoreline. Toronto is situated about halfway between New York and Chicago.
