COOLSINGEL, BEURSPLEIN, CHURCHILLPLEIN

Coolsingel is the busy street that goes from Hofplein to Beursplein. Here you can find modern skyscrapers, a shopping mall, department stores, World Trade Center and 2 historic buildings; the City Hall and the Post Office. Coolsingel end at Churchillplein.

Coolsingel:

The City Hall (Stadhuis van Rotterdam). This impressive building on the Coolsingel is one of the few that survived the bombings in May 1940. It was built between 1914 and 1920 and was designed by prof. dr. Henri Evers. The tower is 76 m tall.

The Old Post Office, just next to the City Hall, also survived the 1940 bombings. It was built in 1915, and served as the head post office until 2007. There are plans to build convert it into a shopping mall with a hotel skyscraper on top of it! Not necessarily a good thing since it is one of the few old jugend buildings in the city.

Beursplein:

At the Beursplein you can find the WTC, the Bourse, Bijenkorf, Hema, V&D, P&C, Beurstraverse and Beursgallery.

World Trade Center. This 25-storey curved green glass scraper was completed in 1986.

Beursplein has an outdoor shopping galleria, partly beneath steet level, called Beurstraverse.

Beurstraverse shopping center. Locally known as Koopgoot, buying trench. It has chain stores and water fountains.

The shopping center passes underground Coolsingel and continues to the west of it.

Many department stores can be found at Beursplein. In the distance you can see the backside of Blaak Tower.

Beursplein was crowded with people this sunny thursday, just before a big power failure! To the left you can see the large V&D department store with the oval on top.

Churchillplein:
