Avenida da Liberdade is an avenue that goes North of the city center, from the square Praca de Restauradores to the circular square Marquis de Pombal, where the Eduardo VII Park is. It is one of the most expensive shopping streets in Europe, and is Lisbon's answer to Paris Champs-Elysées, 90 m wide and 1.1 km long, it has 10 lanes and tiled pavements in teh middle. At Praca de Restauradores, close to Rossio Station, Lisbon’s main railway station (with an art nouveau façade), Palacio Fóz (a remarkable pink palace), the postmodern/art deco VIP Executive Eden Aparthotel (a former theater converted into a hotel), the Monumento aos Restauradores (the monument, a column with the statues of "Victory" and "Independence" was erected in 1886, it commemorates the victory of the Portugese Restoration War) , the 5-star Hotel Avenida Palace and Hard Rock Café (built as Condes Cinema in 1950 in beautiful modernist style). Along Avenida Liberdade you find exclusive designer store brands as Gucci, Prada, Cartier, MaxMara and so on, housed in beautiful, colourful historical buildings. The art nouveau building where Gucci is, is especially beautiful. In front of the Spanish Embassy, you find the Monument to World War 1. There is a also a statue of Simon Bolivár. The yellow Teatro Tivoli is a beautiful theater building. The Fontecruz Lisboa Hotel is an old building behind a glass facade, Sofitel and Tivoli hotels are also at the avenue. There are also newwer buildings at Av. Liberdade, like the postmodern BBVA bank building. The Funicular Lavra is an old yellow tram that goes upwards as a funicular, near the avenue. |
