Leeds churches- Leeds Minster, Leeds Cathedral of St Anne
Nearby Victoria Square, along Cookridge St, is the neo-gothic Leeds Cathedral (Catholic Cathedral of St Anne). This gothic building is fairly small to be a cathedral, completed as late as 1904. This is one of two large churches in the city centre; the Leeds Minster, a neo-gothic revival parish church, situated near the river, is the other one. The original church building dates back to the 7th century, while the current gothic Minster is from the mid-19th century. It is dedicated to St Peter and was a parish church before becoming a minster in 2012. The building, built in ashlar stone, is grade I listed. There are several churches with fairly high spires along Woodhouse Lane, that goes through the University of Leeds. One was converted into a night club, simply called the Church. |
