Views from the Galata Tower
GALATA KULESI, KARAKÖY
The Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi in Turkish) is one of few landmarks in central Istanbul that has an observation deck. It is situated in the Karaköy neighbourhood (formerly Galata) to the North of the Golden Horn and Sultanahmet, near the southern end of Istiklal Caddesi. The Galata Tower is a historic medieval landmark. From the top you can see all parts of central Istanbul, it offers 360 degree views. There is also a restaurant, a café and a night club on the top.
It was built as Christea Turris (the Tower of Christ in Latin) by the Genoese. There was another tower before, but the current tower was completed in 1348. It is 67m tall and formed as a coned cylinder.
