STENGADE, ST OLAFS CHURCH

When you approach Helsingør by ferry or train, you will immediately enter in the small historic town center with its pedestrian streets, nice stores, Danish flags, small squares and department stores. St Olaf's Church and the Town Hall are the most prominent buildings. Stengade is the main street and Axeltorv is the main square. Just a few blocks North of the old city center you will find the new Culture Center, the harbour and the legendary Kronborg Castle (click here).

Havnepladsen (Harbour Square) with the Swedish pillar, a 11.75m high coppar columns that was erected in 1947 to show gratitude to Sweden, since they helped Danish refugees during the World War II. This is the first sight when you enter from the ferry. To the right is St Olafs Kirke.

St Olaf's Church (Helsingør Domkirke, St Olaf's Kirke), Helsingør's tallest building. A red brick gothic church that was built between 1480 and 1559. The first romanesque building was built in the 1200s.

St Olaf's Church is now a cathedral.

Sankt Mariae Kirke (St Mary's Church), here seen from Skt Anna Gade, was built in the middle ages. The composer Dietrich Buxtehude was organist here in the 1660s. The church forms the south wing of a Carmelite monastery from 1430, Vor fru kloster (Cloister of Our Lady).

St Mary's Church has concerts inside its enclosed courtyard. Helsingor Municipal Museum is right next to it.

Stengade (Stone Street) is the main pedestrian street of Elsinore. Here you find beautiful historic buildings as well as many nice stores and restaurants. You won't hesitate that you are in Denmark!

Stengade is full of Danish flags!
