This page is about our brief visit to Sonsonate, the capital of the Sonsonate department. This midsized city is situated in the western part of El Salvador, on the Sensunapan River, only about 30km from Guatemala. We only passed it by briefly on the way between San Salvador and Ruta del Flores.

The city is quie undeveloped compared to for example San Salvador, but there is a few colourful nice heritage buildings, a large welcoming sign in Hollywood style and an old locomotive in the city. The city is famous for its cotton industry, and is close to volcanos and coral reefs.
