La Libertad- La Libertad department, El Puerto (port), beachesPopulation: 36 000 La Libertad is the capital of the La Libertad department, and is situated on coastal area with amazing beaches along the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the main tourist destinations of El Salvador. La Libertad has nice, white beaches and an important port, El Puerto de La Libertad. Beautiful hills with expensive houses surround it. It is the surfing capital of El Salvador, and attracts many foreign tourists for surfing. The boardwalk beach promenade is modern with curvy, colourful benches. Along the boardwalk there are nice restaurants and an amphitheater. There is a long pier that begins at the boardwalk and is built above the sea, with seafood markets that sell fish and souvenirs. There are also craft shops. The pier was completed in 2010. The port was the first one in El Salvador. It has now lost its commercial importance, since two larger ports have been constructed, but is popular for tourism and fishing. The town itself is a bit neglect and dull, all that attracts tourists are concentrated to the sea. According to my guide book the city is known for surfing and drug dealing, something we didn't noticed. The town of La Libertad is very close to San Salvador's airport, and less then one hour by car from the capital. We made a half daytrip by car to La Libertad to visit a fishing restaurant at the boardwalk, that featured beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. We also made brief visit to the beach. The department stretches far to the north, bordering San Salvador's metro area and the neighbouring city of Santa Tecla, the San Salvador Volcano (Quezaltepec) is also situated within the La Libertad department. |
